December 13, 1928 - August 29, 2021

Carol A. Clarkson

Carol A. Clarkson of Savannah, GA died peacefully in her home on Sunday, August 29 after fracturing her hip a few weeks earlier.  She was 92 years old.  Carol was born on December 13, 1928, in Cincinnati, Ohio to John B. Fertig and Anna (Muhl) Fertig.

Carol graduated from the University of Cincinnati, and moved to Chicago, IL to raise her family before settling on Wilmington Island, GA in 1979.

Carol was a longtime member of the Wilmington Island Garden Club.

She had a lifelong love of reading, especially novels, mysteries, and the New Yorker magazine. She was a frequent patron of libraries, always on the lookout for the newest releases.

Carol was known for her meticulous cross stitching, needlepoint, and exceptional skill as a seamstress.  She will be remembered for her wide-ranging intelligence on many subjects; she never lost a game of Trivial Pursuit!

She is survived by her daughter, Cheryl L. Clarkson of Boston, MA and her grandchildren, Dr. Danielle Clarkson-Townsend, and Drew Clarkson Townsend, both of Boston, MA.  She is proceeded in death by her husband of 58 years, George Mendenhall Clarkson, and her daughter Melanie Ann Clarkson.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Wilmington Island Garden Club or the Wilmington Island Public Library.

Cheryl, I am so sorry to hear of the passing of your beautiful Mom. She most certainly had a good long run and has a great legacy in you, Danielle and Drew. That said, I think it is extraordinarily difficult to lose a parent, no matter the age. You are in my thoughts. Love, Susan Gilmore
